Container Cargo Volume Increases by 2.9%, Securing Shipping Capacity a Top Priority for Export Companies
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (President Cha Min-sik) announced on the 28th that the total cargo volume at Yeosu and Gwangyang ports in August this year reached 24,643 thousand tons, showing a double-digit increase of 12.3% (2,701 thousand tons) compared to the same month last year (21,942 thousand tons).
As a result, the cumulative total cargo volume up to August was 195,742 thousand tons, a 7.2% increase compared to the same period last year (182,515 thousand tons), making it possible to achieve 300 million tons by the end of the year.
In particular, Gwangyang Port's container cargo volume processed 170 thousand TEU, an increase of 2.9% (5 thousand TEU) compared to the same month last year (165 thousand TEU), reducing the decline rate of containers from 6.2% to 5.2% (cumulative up to August).
The authority plans to prioritize support for securing shipping space for export companies in the surrounding areas, such as the Yeosu industrial complex, which are facing difficulties due to a shortage of shipping space, as well as increasing container cargo volume.
An official from the authority stated, "We plan to actively attract irregular vessels such as temporary ships to secure additional shipping space and resolve the shortage of containers by the end of the year," adding, "We will make further efforts to improve port services that surrounding companies can feel."
