Twitter Users Can Now Support Creators with Bitcoin Donations
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Social media platform Twitter announced on the 23rd (local time) that it will allow users to support their favorite creators with Bitcoin tips.
According to CNBC on the same day, Twitter stated that the 'Tip' feature will be introduced this week to all Apple iOS users worldwide.
Android device users will also be able to use the 'Tip' feature in a few weeks.
In May, Twitter had piloted the tip feature allowing followers to send cash to creators for their posts. This is interpreted as a strategy to attract creators to its platform by enabling them to earn money from their carefully crafted content.
Until now, only fiat currency could be used for tipping, but cryptocurrency is now also accepted as a payment method.
Accordingly, Twitter plans to integrate the Bitcoin Lightning wallet service 'Strike', which allows sending, receiving, and storing cryptocurrency, into Twitter.
Twitter does not charge any separate fees on tips exchanged between users and creators.
CNBC pointed out that considering Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has been an active supporter of cryptocurrency, it is not surprising that Bitcoin is allowed in the tip feature.
CEO Dorsey has revealed that he has been experimenting with Bitcoin mining over the past few months and has said that nothing is more important to work on than Bitcoin.
Twitter also announced on the same day that it is experimenting with a feature that allows users to verify the authenticity of their owned digital assets, NFTs (Non-fungible Tokens), and display them to others.
Although Twitter did not disclose specific details, it explained that this feature could support creators who produce digital art.
