[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The stories resting in Manguri Park are awakening through the voices of Jungnang-gu residents.
Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi) has attracted attention with the video series “Reading Manguri Park,” a narration project created to widely promote the district’s representative landmark, Manguri Park.
“Reading Manguri Park” is a video series introducing famous modern and contemporary historical figures resting in Manguri Park and narrating their famous quotes. Produced monthly with a total of 12 episodes, each video is about five minutes long. Local residents related to the featured figure appear, visit the person’s grave, read their famous quotes aloud, and conclude by sharing their reflections.
In the March episode featuring “Yu Gwansun,” a student of the same generation as the independence activist appeared to commemorate Samiljeol (March 1st Movement). In April, healthcare workers at the public health center read the famous quotes of Ji Seok-yeong, who introduced the smallpox vaccination method to Korea, reinforcing the determination to overcome COVID-19.
In the May episode “Bang Jeong-hwan,” a daycare teacher read “The Promise of Children” to celebrate Children’s Day, and in July’s “Park In-hwan” episode, poet Son Hee-ja from the Jungnang Writers’ Association narrated “When Time Passes.”
In August, Kang Tae-jin, president of the Jungnang branch of the Liberation Association, read the famous quotes of Ahn Chang-ho, reflecting on the historical significance and value of the independence movement.
This month, to welcome autumn, a cultural artist was selected as the video’s protagonist. Painter Lee Gyu-young of the Jungnang Art Association read a letter by Lee Jung-seop, a pioneer of modern Korean art, and captured the scenery of Manguri Park on canvas.
The narration videos can be viewed on the Jungnang-gu YouTube channel.
Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi of Jungnang-gu said, “We are vividly recreating the lives and thoughts of historical figures through the voices of future generations, delivering a deep resonance. We will overcome the COVID-19 crisis together with our residents by inheriting the noble spirit of patriots and famous figures who led turbulent times.”
