Justice Oh Kyung-mi Inaugurated... "I Will Create a Space for Reconciliation Beyond Discrimination and Hatred"
[Asia Economy Reporter Bae Kyunghwan] Newly appointed Supreme Court Justice Oh Kyung-mi stated, "I will do my best to create a place of peace and coexistence where conflicting values can be reconciled beyond discrimination and hatred through purposive interpretation of the law."
On the 17th, Justice Oh said in her inaugural speech, "Conflicts arising in modern society, where diverse values and opinions clash, are multifaceted, making the mission of a Supreme Court justice feel difficult and heavy."
Justice Oh explained, "People now call this the era of confirmation bias. Especially in times like these, the public's longing for a peaceful point where conflicting values can coexist is even more desperate, and expectations placed on the Supreme Court inevitably grow." She then referred to John Stuart Mill's 'On Liberty,' saying, "To find the truth, opposing things must be reconciled and combined. Both sides gathered under hostile banners must go through a process of clashing to reach the truth."
Finally, she said, "I believe the mission of the Supreme Court can be achieved by allowing different opinions, listening carefully, engaging in discussions, and adopting an attitude of reflection and inclusion. As a Supreme Court justice, I will listen a lot, read extensively, and think deeply while exploring the ultimate values and truths of people and society."
