View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] After the College of Pharmacy switched to an undergraduate system, the competition rate for pharmacy schools surpassed that of medical schools in the first early admission process.
According to Jongro Academy on the 15th, the average competition rate for pharmacy schools in the 2022 academic year early admissions was 44.1 to 1, higher than the average competition rate of 36.3 to 1 for 39 medical schools nationwide.
By admission type, the highest competition rate for pharmacy schools was Sungkyunkwan University’s essay-based admission at 666.4 to 1, followed by Dongguk University essay (583.5 to 1), Kyung Hee University essay (431.6 to 1), Korea University (Sejong) essay (408.9 to 1), and Chung-Ang University essay (147.3 to 1).

View original imageThe average competition rate for pharmacy schools at 11 universities in Seoul was 65.3 to 1, twice that of the metropolitan area and provinces. The average competition rate for 5 universities in the metropolitan area was 30.7 to 1, and for 21 universities outside the metropolitan area, it was 33.8 to 1.
Lim Seong-ho, CEO of Jongro Academy, analyzed, "The concentration of top-tier science students in pharmacy schools appeared more significantly than expected, and it is presumed that many science students retaking exams or taking a gap year applied through the essay-based admission." He added, "The preference for medical and pharmaceutical fields is expected to increase further."
From the 2023 academic year, when the minimum admission quota for local talent is raised to 40%, it is also anticipated that top-tier students from provincial areas will flock to medical and pharmaceutical fields.

The average competition rate for medical schools in the 2022 academic year early admissions was 36.3 to 1, up from 32.9 to 1 the previous year. The number of applicants was 65,611, an increase of 4,746 from the previous year.
The admission type with the highest competition rate among medical schools was Inha University’s essay-based admission, recording 486.5 to 1. The second highest was Ajou University essay at 468.6 to 1, and third was Yonsei University (Mirae) essay admission at 329.0 to 1.
The average competition rate for medical schools in the Seoul area was 45.9 to 1, but the metropolitan area medical schools had a higher rate at 138.4 to 1. Universities outside the metropolitan area had a rate of 24.6 to 1.
The average competition rate for dental schools at 11 universities nationwide was 32.0 to 1, up from 31.2 to 1 the previous year. By admission type, the highest was Kyungpook National University essay (263.8 to 1), followed by Kyung Hee University essay (238.4 to 1), and Yonsei University essay (119.1 to 1).

The average competition rate for 12 colleges of Korean medicine in early admissions was 29.1 to 1, slightly down from 29.5 to 1 the previous year. The establishment of pharmacy schools did not have a significant impact. By admission type, the highest competition rate was Kyung Hee University essay admission for humanities at 303.6 to 1, followed by Kyung Hee University essay admission for natural sciences at 118.4 to 1.
