Long Chuseok Holiday... Securities Firms Actively Engage in 'Seohakgemi Marketing'
Focus on Overseas Stock Investors
24-Hour Call Center Operation
Preferential Fees and Investment Support Funds Provided
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Ji-hwan] Although the domestic stock market will enter a five-day break during the Chuseok holiday, most overseas stock markets will remain open. Securities firms, capitalizing on the recent surge in popularity of overseas stocks, are operating various trading services for investors who wish to trade overseas stocks during the holiday period just as they do on weekdays, and have prepared various events such as investment support funds and commission discounts.
According to the financial investment industry on the 14th, the domestic stock market will be closed for three days from the 20th to the 22nd of this month. Including the weekend, stock trading will be unavailable for five days. Among Asian countries, the stock markets in China (19th?21st) and Japan (20th and 23rd) will also be closed. However, except for these countries, the majority of overseas stock markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany are expected to remain open.
Investors can trade overseas stocks online (HTS·MTS) just like on weekdays, and individual customers without overseas stock accounts can start investing in overseas stocks by opening a new account non-face-to-face. Most securities firms, including Samsung Securities and Shinhan Financial Investment, plan to operate a 24-hour overseas stock desk during the Chuseok holiday to prepare for any possible investor confusion. The overseas stock desk is a type of overseas stock-related call center that takes overseas stock orders by phone or answers questions during the ordering process.
Securities firms have also prepared various events such as investment support funds and commission discounts. Samsung Securities supports up to $100 for investors starting overseas stock investment for the first time. If there has been no overseas stock trading from January 1, 2015, to last month, they provide an investment support fund of $20, and then provide a stepwise trading celebration support fund of up to $80 depending on the amount of online overseas stock trading.
KB Securities and Kiwoom Securities offer a benefit of applying an online overseas stock commission rate of 0.07%. Eugene Investment & Securities is holding an ‘Overseas Stock Bargain Event’ through a lottery, where popular overseas stocks can be purchased at prices from 10 years ago. Stocks such as Google, Tesla, and Apple can be purchased at striking prices of $266.5, $4.8, and $13.6, respectively.

The reason securities firms are enthusiastic about overseas stock-related services and events is due to the steady demand for overseas stock investment. According to the Korea Securities Depository, the settlement amount of overseas stocks by domestic investors this year up to the previous day reached $272.1 billion, which is already 1.4 times last year’s amount ($198.3 billion). The increase in overseas stock trading during the holiday period is also clear. Looking at the average daily trading amount of overseas stock customers using Shinhan Financial Investment during this year’s Lunar New Year period, it increased by 169% compared to last year’s Chuseok.
