Lee Jae-myung Solidifies 'Solo Run' in 1st Super Week with 51.41% of Votes (Comprehensive)
December 12 Gangwon Regional Primary
1st Super Week Cumulative Results Announcement
Key Ho-nam Primary on 25-26
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] On the 12th, Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung secured 285,852 votes out of a total of 558,800 votes in the Democratic Party's first presidential primary Super Week, winning a majority with 51.41% of the vote. Former leader Lee Nak-yeon received 31.08% of the votes.
With about 30% of the total votes in the first Super Week favoring Governor Lee, it is expected that the momentum of the "dominant trend" will continue in the remaining regional primaries. The possibility of advancing directly to next year's presidential election without a runoff vote has also increased.
According to the Democratic Party on the 12th, in the combined results of the votes from Chungcheong Province, TK (Daegu-Gyeongbuk), Gangwon delegates, party members with voting rights, and the first electoral college vote, Governor Lee achieved a total vote share of 51.41%. Former leader Lee Nak-yeon’s cumulative vote share was 31.08%, trailing Governor Lee by 20.33 percentage points. Following them were former Minister of Justice Chu Mi-ae (11.35%), former Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun (4.27%), Representative Park Yong-jin (1.25%), and Representative Kim Du-kwan (0.63%).
In his regional primary speech in Gangwon, Governor Lee appealed for support, saying, “The most important factor in the primary is competitiveness in the general election,” and “The candidate with overwhelming competitiveness across all regions, all age groups, and all political spectrums?progressive, moderate, and conservative?is Lee Jae-myung.” He continued, “I am the only winning card, Lee Jae-myung. We will uphold the ‘One Team Spirit’ through a policy-focused election without negativity, unite under a melting pot election committee, and definitely establish the 4th Democratic government. I will clearly show that the president is not a ruler above the people but someone who works for the people.”
He further emphasized, “Only a clean and competent president, with a clear reform spirit who keeps promises to the people and has the courage to do what needs to be done, can overcome this crisis and create a newer, more hopeful country.”
The remaining primary schedule is as follows: October 25 in Gwangju and Jeonnam, October 26 in Jeonbuk, October 1 in Jeju, October 2 in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, and October 3 in Incheon. Subsequently, regional primaries in Gyeonggi and Seoul are scheduled for October 9 and 10, respectively. The results of the ‘3rd Super Week’ will also be announced during the Seoul regional primary.
