Philippines Easing Lockdown, Records Highest Daily New COVID-19 Cases Ever

According to the Philippine Department of Health on the 12th, the previous day saw a record high of 26,303 new COVID-19 cases in the Philippines. There were 79 deaths.
The Philippine government is considering easing quarantine measures in the Manila metropolitan area, home to 13 million people, to boost economic recovery. Harry Roque, the presidential spokesperson, announced plans to implement differentiated lockdowns by region based on risk levels starting at the end of this month. Local officials have also requested the central government to relax restrictions such as movement limitations for those fully vaccinated to increase vaccination rates.

Currently, 15 million people, or 13% of the total population in the Philippines, have completed vaccination. The government aims to increase the vaccination rate to 70% of the total population by the end of this year and to 90% next year.
