"Catch the Honchujok"... Convenience Stores Launch Chuseok Lunchboxes and Ready Meals
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chunhan] Amid expectations that the number of 'Honchujok'?people spending Chuseok alone at home due to the impact of COVID-19?will increase, convenience stores are launching a variety of lunchboxes and ready-to-eat products.
According to the convenience store industry on the 11th, Seven Eleven released three Chuseok products: Hankki Research Institute Perilla Oil Bibimbap, Surisuri Sulsul Assorted Jeon, and Surisuri Sulsul Five-Color Japchae.
Hankki Research Institute Perilla Oil Bibimbap is a holiday lunchbox richly filled with eight representative namul (seasoned vegetable dishes) ingredients commonly enjoyed during the holidays, such as radish greens, aster scaber, chamnamul, and stir-fried bracken. It includes separate servings of Korean pork bulgogi to be enjoyed together with the bibimbap, and instead of gochujang (red chili paste), it contains soy sauce and savory perilla oil to mix with.
Surisuri Sulsul Assorted Jeon includes a variety of traditional holiday pancakes such as chili pepper jeon, omisanjeok, donggeurangttaeng, kimchi jeon, seafood chive jeon, mung bean jeon, and tofu jeon. Surisuri Sulsul Five-Color Japchae maximizes texture by adding colorful toppings like chewy glass noodles, pork, mushrooms, carrots, eggs, and chives.
Emart24 will sell the holiday lunchbox 'Hangawi Man Gatara Hansangcharim' from the 15th until early next month. This lunchbox contains representative holiday side dishes such as braised pork ribs, japchae, assorted jeon, and namul, as well as a traditional sweet rice cake for dessert. Until the end of this month, a 2,000 KRW discount will be offered on the sale price, and customers will receive one free item of either bottled water or canned sikhye (sweet rice drink). An additional 2,000 KRW discount is available when paying with the event card. In addition, Peacock assorted jeon and Peacock white songpyeon and mosip leaf songpyeon are also on sale.
An Emart24 official said, “We anticipate many Honchujok customers who will not return to their hometowns this Chuseok, so we launched lunchboxes to allow them to enjoy a variety of holiday foods at home and prepared exceptional discount benefits.”
