Guatemala Infinite Horizon Ixil, South Africa Puku Children's Literature Foundation Also
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 10th that Guatemala's Infinite Horizons Ixil, India's National Institute of Open Schooling, and South Africa's Puku Children's Literature Foundation have received the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize. UNESCO designated September 8 as "International Literacy Day" and annually selects individuals and organizations that have contributed to eradicating illiteracy worldwide. The King Sejong Literacy Prize has been supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism since 1989. It honors King Sejong's spirit in creating Hangul, enabling everyone to easily learn and use spoken and written language.
Infinite Horizons Ixil is a non-governmental organization conducting gender equality education activities in Cahul, Guatemala. Recently, due to the spread of COVID-19, it provided interactive remote literacy education programs to rural youth who could not attend school. Learning support was offered in Spanish and the Mayan indigenous language Ixil at community libraries. Education through television and radio broadcasts was also conducted concurrently. Approximately 1,900 youths participated last year.
India's National Institute of Open Schooling is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Education that provides distance learning. Since 2016, it has offered sign language learning video content and dictionaries for seven middle and high school subjects to learners who are deaf or hard of hearing. Since 2018, 24,285 learners have benefited. It is regarded as opening a new chapter in education for persons with disabilities through the development of sign language content and assessment tools.
