According to the local public broadcaster NHK on the 3rd, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan was counted at 16,738 (as of 6:30 PM), bringing the total confirmed cases to 1,546,318. The number of deaths increased by 63, reaching 16,282.
The number of new confirmed cases decreased by 7,455 (30.8%) compared to the previous week, indicating that the rate of infection has lowered from its peak. The daily number of new cases has also shrunk for nine consecutive days, but the spread of infection remains a serious situation.
For the week ending on the 3rd, the number of new confirmed cases per 100,000 people in Japan was 102.5, far exceeding the Japanese government's level 4 criterion (25 or more), which indicates explosive infection spread.
