China Warns Taiwan, Which Held Security Talks with US and Japan, "Serious Threat to Peace... Inviting Destruction"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The Chinese government recently warned Taiwan, which has consecutively held 'security dialogues (video conferences)' in the form of parliamentary exchanges with the United States and Japan, stating that it is "a serious threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and is pushing the Taiwanese people into disaster," and that it "only invites destruction."
According to the online edition of the Chinese media 'People's Daily,' on the 2nd, when asked about the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of Taiwan holding a 'security dialogue' with US and Japanese parliamentarians to discuss issues concerning the Taiwan Strait, spokesperson Zhu Fenglian of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of China responded in this manner.
Spokesperson Zhu evaluated, "The DPP authorities are continuously provoking by pursuing 'independence' and harboring delusions of 'refusing unification by force' with the help of external forces."
Meanwhile, the Chinese government also expressed "firm opposition" to the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee report proposal that effectively upgrades the status of the European Union's representative office in Taiwan.
At a briefing that day, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin was asked about the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee report's suggestion to change the name of the institution acting as the EU's representative office in Taiwan from 'EU Trade Office in Taipei' to 'EU Office in Taiwan.' He said, "It seriously violates the basic norms of international relations, the One-China principle, and the history of China-Europe diplomatic relations."
