LG Chem Yeosu Plant Supports Paid Leave for Daily Workers Receiving COVID-19 Vaccination
Application of 3-Day Minimum Work Requirement for Factory New/Expansion and Maintenance Tasks as of September 1
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Sim Kyung-taek] LG Chem Yeosu Plant in the Jeonnam Yeosu National Industrial Complex has decided to provide one day of paid leave to daily workers who receive the COVID-19 vaccine starting from September 1, demonstrating a leading exemplary case of labor-management coexistence.
The paid leave applies to workers who have worked for three or more days as of September 1 at LG Chem Yeosu Plant in maintenance, repair, and expansion tasks and have received the COVID-19 vaccine (1st or 2nd dose). It can be used if they feel unwell or experience adverse reactions after vaccination and need rest.
The government has recommended since April that if side effects appear the day after vaccination, workers can take up to two days of paid leave or sick leave without a doctor's note.
However, since this is not mandatory and left to the discretion of employers, in the Yeosu Industrial Complex, paid leave for vaccination is currently applied only to some regular employees of large corporations.
Accordingly, Yeosu City sent a cooperation letter in August to 232 companies in the Yeosu Industrial Complex requesting the application of the government's recommendations for the health and safety of workers, and asked for cooperation from the Yeosu Industrial Complex Joint Development Council and the Labor-Management-Government Council, actively requesting participation.
A city official said, "We appreciate LG Chem (Yeosu) for proactively deciding to support paid leave for vaccination for daily workers in the Yeosu Industrial Complex, and this will remain a model case of labor-management coexistence."
LG Chem Yeosu Plant is investing 141 billion KRW by the second half of next year and has been conducting two expansion projects since June, with an estimated total of about 85,000 workers involved in these projects.
