KT Expands Metropolitan IDC Internet Backbone Network Tenfold
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] KT announced on the 2nd that it has expanded its terabit-level network on the ‘One IDC’ internet backbone network connecting six metropolitan area IDCs (Yongsan, Mokdong 1·2, Gangnam, Bundang, Yeouido). This is a tenfold increase compared to the existing IDC backbone network capacity.
With the terabit-level network construction, companies using KT’s metropolitan area IDCs can quickly expand their internet access network in 100-gigabit units when traffic surges sharply.
‘One IDC’ is a technology that connects KT IDCs in the metropolitan area to operate as a single massive IDC. KT’s One IDC is the first in Korea to provide multiple IDCs bundled as one IDC.
One IDC can provide uninterrupted data services by routing through adjacent IDCs to access the backbone network even if a sudden large volume of traffic occurs at one IDC. Also, even if IT resources are distributed across multiple IDCs, they can be managed integrally as a single virtual network without the need for costly physical line configurations.
Additionally, KT has expanded switch bandwidth tenfold to minimize the impact of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. KT will also apply a network total solution that flexibly controls traffic flow to IDCs for the first time in Korea. This solution quickly reroutes traffic when a DDoS attack causes a temporary traffic surge.
The network total solution incorporates various new network technologies such as segment routing and Ethernet VPN (EVPN). Segment routing automatically adjusts traffic paths according to each service. EVPN is optimized for Data Center Interconnect (DCI), logically linking physically separated data centers.
KT IDCs operate various value-added services that allow easy connection to global cloud services. Companies using KT IDCs can connect simply to various public clouds such as AWS and Azure without additional dedicated lines, regardless of which IDC in the metropolitan area they reside in. Even non-KT IDC customers can obtain short-distance dedicated line connections to nearby metropolitan area IDCs at low cost.
