Lee In-young "We Must Seek Comprehensive Humanitarian Cooperation Based on a Flexible Stance on Sanctions"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Minister of Unification Lee In-young stated that in order to achieve humanitarian cooperation, it is necessary to seek a path based on a bolder and more flexible stance regarding sanctions issues.
Minister Lee said in his opening remarks at the '2021 Korea Peninsula International Peace Forum' held on the 31st at the Federation of Korean Industries building in Yeouido, Seoul, "Humanitarian cooperation must be clearly distinguished from the realm of sanctions."
He emphasized, "North Korea also likely has needs for cooperation in areas such as food, health, and medical care due to COVID-19, sanctions, and natural disasters," adding, "Sometimes, to promote humanitarian cooperation, it is necessary to seek a comprehensive path for humanitarian cooperation based on a bolder and more flexible stance on sanctions issues."

Minister Lee added, "Our government hopes to carry out humanitarian cooperation projects toward North Korea in a long-term and sustainable manner," and "We will ensure broad participation from the private sector, international organizations, and NGOs, and support this institutionally and financially."
