Large Explosion Outside Afghan Airport... Suspected Suicide Terror Attack
US Media Reports Multiple Casualties Citing Witnesses
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] A large explosion occurred outside Kabul Airport, the capital of Afghanistan, on the 26th (local time).
According to The Wall Street Journal, John Kirby, spokesperson for the Department of Defense, explained that the explosion occurred at the Abbey Gate of the airport, and the number of casualties has not yet been confirmed.
A witness at the scene said the explosion happened among thousands of crowds and that many casualties occurred.
U.S. officials have identified it as a suicide bombing. With the upcoming deadline of August 31 for the evacuation of U.S. civilians and the completion of withdrawal, the possibility of a suicide bombing attack around the airport, which had been raised, is likely to have become a reality.
Thousands of Afghan locals who are trying to evacuate overseas have gathered at Kabul Airport since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. This explosion is also expected to potentially affect the U.S. withdrawal operation.
