[Gurye=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yuk Miseok] Jeollanam-do Gurye-gun (Governor Kim Sun-ho) and Gurye Office of Education held the 2nd Rural Student Exchange Welcome Ceremony on the 26th at Jungdong Elementary School in Sandong-myeon, Gurye-gun, and signed a business agreement at the event to revitalize small schools.
This semester, 17 elementary and middle school students (14 elementary, 3 middle) from metropolitan areas such as Seoul are studying abroad at Gwangui, Wonchon, Jungdong Elementary Schools, and Sandong Middle School.
The exchange students will live in the county for at least six months and learn about Gurye-gun’s natural environment and historical culture.
At Jungdong Elementary School, where the welcome ceremony was held, 12 students wished to study abroad, attracting the largest number of students in Gurye.
About 40 people, including Kim Sun-ho, Governor of Gurye-gun, Kim Young-hoon, Superintendent of Gurye Office of Education, related officials, exchange students, parents, and enrolled students, attended the welcome ceremony.
Starting with an orchestra performance by enrolled students of Jungdong Elementary School, the students, parents, and related parties warmly welcomed the exchange students with enthusiastic applause.
At this event, along with the welcome ceremony, the county and the Office of Education signed a business agreement to closely cooperate in operating the rural student exchange program.
Governor Kim Sun-ho of Gurye-gun said, “Through the rural student exchange program that revitalizes small rural schools, we expect to boost the local economy and create a butterfly effect that leads to long-term return-to-farming and rural migration. We will do our best to develop it into a nationally recognized role model in cooperation with the Office of Education.”
Attention is focused on whether attracting rural student exchange students can save the disappearing small rural schools and breathe new life into the local community.
