In March, UNIST opened a Smart Healthcare Research Center that combines advanced IT technologies such as smartphones, wearable devices, and artificial intelligence (AI) with medical technology to research digital medical services. The center is promoting the development and demonstration of various services in four areas: prevention, mobile diagnosis, rehabilitation, and medical big data analysis.
Through this business agreement, LG Uplus and the UNIST Smart Healthcare Research Center plan to jointly conduct demonstrations of smart healthcare solutions and collaborative projects, jointly discover solutions for the Ulsan Industrial Accident Specialized Public Hospital scheduled to open in 2025, and propose a healthcare cluster in parallel with the construction of the Busan National Pilot Smart City.
The two institutions will jointly develop smart healthcare solutions centered on the Smart Healthcare Research Center and jointly discover related business opportunities. LG Uplus plans to jointly discover various new solutions through hosting a smart healthcare hackathon for UNIST students and researching mental health management solutions linked with the UNIST Healthcare Center. To this end, UNIST is currently preparing joint projects with excellent overseas universities in related fields.
Additionally, in line with the opening schedule of the Ulsan Industrial Accident Specialized Public Hospital under the Ministry of Employment and Labor’s Korea Workers' Compensation & Welfare Service in 2025, they will discover and verify digital healthcare solutions applicable to rehabilitation and home care fields. The solutions developed by the two institutions are characterized by the extensive integration of advanced technologies such as AI, virtual reality (VR), robotics, genomics, and 3D bioprinting.
They will also jointly establish a healthcare cluster to be developed alongside the construction of the Busan National Pilot Smart City, "Eco Delta City." In the future, LG Uplus plans to not only pursue joint projects with UNIST but also demonstrate solutions currently under development, such as senior care, Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), and AI image recognition and radar-based healthcare monitoring, by utilizing communication technologies like 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT) and its existing capabilities.
