Im Hye-sook, Minister of Science and ICT, said at a meeting held by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) on the 25th, "I sincerely thank the private companies and institution officials who have worked tirelessly without hesitation to overcome COVID-19."
At the meeting held at the Seoul office of the National Information Society Agency (NIA), Minister Im presented plaques of appreciation to the private companies and institutions participating in the TF. Attendees included representatives from Bespin Global, Naver Cloud, LG CNS, Ssangyong Information & Communications, Jade Cross, Kakao, Korea Credit Bureau (KCB), NIA, Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), and Korea Social Security Information Service.
Jung Eun-kyung, Commissioner of the KDCA, also expressed gratitude, saying, "I thank the many companies and institutions whose dedication and hard work greatly helped to operate the pre-reservation system stably," and added, "We will do our best to ensure that all citizens can receive COVID-19 vaccinations safely and promptly."
Earlier, ahead of the vaccine reservation for those aged 18 to 49 scheduled from the 9th, the government formed a 'public-private joint TF' including the Ministry of Science and ICT, KDCA, Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and private companies and institutions to improve the reservation system. The TF derived improvement measures such as cloud-based identity verification and diversification of authentication methods through on-site inspections and diagnostics. Subsequently, the Ministry of Science and ICT and KDCA operated on-site situation rooms in Seoul and Osong.
During the two weeks prior to the reservation, about 100 experts from private companies and public institutions were deployed for system improvements. The identity verification part, identified as the biggest bottleneck in the existing reservation system, was transferred and developed on a private cloud to reduce system load and improve processing speed.
From the first day of reservations on the 9th to the 20th, a total of 28.98 million identity verifications were made for vaccine reservations. The daily maximum reached 3.17 million, with an average of 2.4 million verifications. About 40% of all reservations were concentrated within the first 30 minutes after the reservation opened.
The number of authentication methods was also doubled. Previously, only mobile phone, joint certificate, and i-PIN were available, but simple authentication methods such as Naver, Kakao, and the PASS service from the three telecom companies were newly added to diversify options. A traffic light system was also added to indicate the processing status by authentication method.
Additionally, a 10-day pre-reservation quota system was applied to disperse daily reservation targets to fewer than 1.9 million people. Duplicate access was restricted so that only one reservation could be made per completed identity verification to prevent excessive concentration.
