Kumho Petrochemical Advances Eco-Friendly Raw Material Production Using Waste Plastic
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Kumho Petrochemical announced that it will promote a manufacturing business for eco-friendly raw material 'Recycled Styrene' (RSM), obtained by pyrolyzing waste polystyrene (waste PS).
Kumho Petrochemical is advancing the construction of an RSM plant through a partnership with an overseas company specializing in plastic recycling. At the same time, it is preparing to commercialize 'Eco-SSBR' by applying RSM to its own product SSBR. Kumho Petrochemical's SSBR (Solution Styrene Butadiene Rubber) is a high-performance synthetic rubber that improves tire wear and fuel efficiency, and when RSM is used as a raw material, it is reborn as a product with eco-friendliness. In the future, Kumho Petrochemical will supply 'Eco-SSBR' to domestic and international tire manufacturers and footwear makers who consider sustainability.
Polystyrene (PS) is a plastic commonly encountered in daily life, such as dairy product containers, disposable cup lids, food containers, agricultural and marine product packaging trays, and Styrofoam for electronic product packaging. Currently, physical recycling methods are used for polystyrene after disposal, mainly for manufacturing low-grade plastics. Even then, if contaminated with food packaging, it must be incinerated or landfilled.
Accordingly, Kumho Petrochemical plans to realize resource circulation and carbon reduction by collecting waste polystyrene, which has been difficult to recycle, and utilizing chemical recycling methods such as pyrolysis. Furthermore, as a petrochemical material producer, it is interested in waste reduction and is planning businesses that transform waste plastics into eco-friendly products beyond RSM.
