Minju Nochong to Proceed with General Strike in October
Concerns Grow Over the Spread of COVID-19
[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) has decided to proceed with a general strike in October.
On the 23rd, the KCTU announced that it held the 73rd extraordinary delegate meeting and passed the agenda for the October general strike. The delegate meeting is composed of delegates elected at a ratio of one per 500 union members and decides on important agendas. This delegate meeting was conducted by connecting 58 meeting rooms of affiliated organizations nationwide online to prevent COVID-19, with 1,107 out of 1,708 registered delegates attending.
The agenda for the general strike was passed unanimously without a vote. The KCTU plans a large-scale general strike on October 20, involving 1.1 million union members.
The core demands of the KCTU's general strike are ▲ prohibition of layoffs during disasters and nationalization of industries during employment crises ▲ payment of disaster livelihood income ▲ abolition of irregular workers ▲ comprehensive revision of labor laws ▲ free support for housing, education, medical care, and caregiving.
The KCTU is expected to mobilize as many union members as possible to demonstrate its strength. The goal is to influence the upcoming presidential election next year. However, if the general strike is conducted on a large scale, concerns about the spread of COVID-19 are expected to increase. The KCTU has left open the possibility of not holding the rally depending on the COVID-19 situation.
