A Crew Member in His 30s Missing off Tongyeong Coast... Search Hampered by High Waves
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Jucheol In] A crew member in his 30s went missing from a container ship anchored off the coast near Tongyeong, Gyeongnam, prompting the Coast Guard to launch a search.
According to the Tongyeong Coast Guard on the 21st, at around 8:58 a.m. that day, a report was received that crew member A (39) went missing from a container ship (18,051 tons) anchored about 8 km (4.5 nautical miles) southeast of Galdo, Tongyeong City.
A, who was on duty the previous evening, did not appear even after his shift ended that day, leading fellow crew members to report to the Tongyeong Vessel Traffic Service (VTS). The ship, carrying 20 people, was waiting there before entering Gwangyang Port.
The Tongyeong Coast Guard dispatched a 1,000-ton patrol vessel to the scene, but search efforts are hampered by waves 3 to 4 meters high amid a wind and wave advisory.
