Gurye-gun Operates Disability Experience Class to Improve Awareness of Disabilities

[Gurye=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yuk Miseok] Jeollanam-do Gurye-gun (Governor Kim Sunho) announced on the 18th that it has operated a ‘Children’s Disability Experience Classroom’ for about 230 children aged 5 to 7 from kindergartens and daycare centers in the area for one month since last month.

The Children’s Disability Experience Classroom is a disability awareness improvement project aimed at eliminating prejudice and stereotypes against people with disabilities and creating a society where everyone lives together.

It was conducted with various experiential education tailored to children’s perspectives, etiquette for interacting with people with disabilities, and theoretical education on accepting disabilities as differences.

This disability experience classroom was operated under the theme, “We can listen with our eyes and speak with our hands!”

Through hands-on experiences such as singing children’s songs in sign language and simple greetings, children experienced the difficulties faced by the hearing impaired and developed awareness that people with and without disabilities should create a society where they live together.

Children who participated in the experience were given disability awareness fairy tale books to read with their parents, providing an opportunity to understand and indirectly experience disabilities.

Gurye-gun and the Welfare Center for the Disabled collaborated to provide injury prevention education, including precautionary rules, to raise awareness of large and small safety accidents that occur in daily life.

Governor Kim Sunho said, “88.1% of the causes of disabilities are due to acquired accidents and diseases,” and added, “We will continue to make efforts in accident and disability prevention education so that children in our region can grow up healthily.”
