Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Kim Ki-nam's First Half Salary 3.5 Billion Won... Lee Jae-yong Unpaid
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Kim Ki-nam, Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics, received the highest compensation within the company in the first half of this year, totaling 3.493 billion KRW. Lee Jae-yong, Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics, who has not received a separate salary since 2017, has continued unpaid management for five years.
According to the semi-annual report disclosed by Samsung Electronics on the 17th, Vice Chairman Kim received a total compensation of 3.493 billion KRW in the first half of this year. His salary was about 880 million KRW, but his bonus amounted to 2.581 billion KRW. As Samsung Electronics' semiconductor division recorded record-breaking performance in the first half of this year, it is estimated that the performance incentives for Vice Chairman Kim, who oversees the semiconductor division, also increased significantly.
Samsung Electronics stated, "Regarding company-wide quantitative indicators, from 2017 to 2019, we achieved an ROE of 15.7%, a pre-tax profit margin of 20.7%, and a stock price increase of 54.8%. In 2020, the DS division achieved annual sales of 103 trillion KRW and operating profit of 21 trillion KRW. Considering these achievements and contributions to strengthening business competitiveness in non-memory sectors such as memory market maintenance, System LSI, and foundry related to non-quantitative indicators, the bonus was calculated."
Next, Ko Dong-jin, President of Samsung Electronics, who oversees the Mobile and IT business, received 2.758 billion KRW in compensation for the first half of the year. President Ko's salary was only 585 million KRW, but the bonus accounted for most of it at 2.145 billion KRW. The company explained the background of the bonus calculation, stating, "In addition to company-wide quantitative indicators, we considered the leadership in the market through technological innovation in mobile fields such as 5G and foldable devices, as well as contributions to securing next-generation communication technologies."
