Muju-gun, Jeoksang-myeon Sacheon-ri Roundabout Maintenance
[Muju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hanho] Muju-gun announced on the 17th that it will undertake the maintenance of a roundabout to improve the safety of residents living in the Sacheon-ri area of Jeoksang-myeon and to resolve traffic inconveniences.
Muju-gun plans to issue a construction contract within this month with a project cost of 500 million KRW, including 140 million KRW in national funds, and complete the project by May 2022.
To this end, after starting the detailed design for the installation of the Jeoksang roundabout in January, the detailed design was finalized earlier this month with advice from the Road Traffic Authority and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
The previous roundabout was a national road facility, but after the construction of a national road bypass, it was transferred to Muju-gun. The roundabout did not meet installation standards, causing safety hazards such as the failure to reduce driving speed, which is a strength of roundabouts.
Muju-gun expects that the maintenance of the roundabout will not only resolve residents' traffic complaints but also ensure safe walking and eliminate concerns about traffic accidents.
Meanwhile, according to the 'Effects of Roundabout Installation and Improvement' announced by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in March, the introduction of roundabouts over the past 10 years has resulted in a 21% reduction in travel time, a 24.7% decrease in traffic accidents, a 76% reduction in fatal accidents, and a 33.1% decrease in casualties.
