People Power Party "Regret over Ahn Cheol-soo's Actions That Broke His Promise"
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] The People Power Party expressed regret and placed responsibility on Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People Party, for his declaration of the breakdown of the merger.
Yang Jun-woo, spokesperson for the People Power Party, stated in a commentary on the 16th, "The merger with the People Party has been finally broken off. We express our regret over the unilateral decision that betrayed the public's expectations for opposition unity."
He continued, "The merger was originally proposed by Leader Ahn Cheol-soo during the recent by-elections. It was meant to signify that the two forces yearning for regime change should naturally unite. At that time, Leader Ahn declared that he would not demand any shares, but our party has respected the People Party's position as much as possible during the negotiation process," he claimed.
He added, "During the negotiations, excessive demands for shares, even unreasonable requests such as changing the party name, were made, but we have approached them with a spirit of concession and understanding. However, the reason the final agreement was not reached was that bigger demands were added each time one request was accepted," he asserted.

Spokesperson Yang said, "The people who observed the negotiation process will know which side was more desperate for integration and which side clung more to a handful of vested interests. We regret the action of reversing promises as easily as turning over one's hand, citing that the political situation during the Seoul mayoral election when the merger was proposed is different from now. However, we believe that we will work together in future steps with the common goal of regime change," he concluded.
