Over 150,000 Second Dose Vaccinations for AZ Recipients in First Half, 27.2% Completed
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The number of people receiving their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in South Korea increased by about 140,000 on the 14th, while those who completed vaccination rose by approximately 182,000.
According to the COVID-19 Vaccination Response Promotion Team (Promotion Team) on the 15th, the number of new first-dose recipients the previous day was 140,972, accounting for 43.6% of the total population (51,349,116 people, based on resident registration population as of December 2020) having received at least one vaccine dose.
From the 9th to the 13th, the daily new first-dose recipients were 433,768, 261,380, 175,763, 166,325, and 241,514, respectively.
By vaccine type, the new first-dose recipients were 121,593 for Pfizer, 16,348 for AstraZeneca (AZ), and 3,031 for Moderna.
As of midnight on the day, the cumulative number of first-dose recipients in the country was 22,368,941, representing 43.6% of the total population (51,349,116 as of last December) having received the first dose.
The cumulative first-dose recipients by vaccine were 10,666,215 for AstraZeneca, 9,624,378 for Pfizer, and 948,571 for Moderna.
The cumulative number of Janssen vaccine recipients was 1,129,777. Since the Janssen vaccine requires only one dose, recipients are counted in both the first and second dose statistics.
The number of people who completed the second dose increased by 182,004 in one day. By vaccine type, AstraZeneca accounted for 137,529 and Pfizer for 44,475.
Thus, the total number of people who completed the second dose reached 9,735,672, which is about 19.0% of the population.
The cumulative number of fully vaccinated individuals by vaccine type is 5,219,173 for Pfizer, 3,323,983 for AstraZeneca (including 1,033,354 who received mixed vaccinations), 62,739 for Moderna, with the remainder being Janssen recipients.
Among those who had already received the first dose, the second dose vaccinations for AstraZeneca recipients aged 60 to 74, vaccinated in May and June, have begun in earnest. Including 15,804 who received Pfizer as a mixed vaccination, an additional 153,333 people completed vaccination, and 28,671 Pfizer recipients also completed their second dose.

Meanwhile, the Promotion Team has temporarily extended the interval between mRNA vaccine doses (Moderna and Pfizer) to up to six weeks to reflect uncertainties in vaccine supply. Accordingly, those scheduled for their second mRNA vaccine dose after the 16th will have their vaccination interval extended to six weeks.
