Yeonggwang-gun Cancels the 60th Jeonnam Sports Festival Due to COVID-19 Impact

[Yeonggwang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jeonseong] Jeollanam-do Yeonggwang-gun (Governor Kim Junsung) announced on the 13th that the 60th Jeollanam-do Sports Festival, which was scheduled to be held from the 13th to the 16th of next month, has been canceled.

The Jeonnam Sports Festival was canceled following consultations between the Jeonnam Sports Council, Jeonnam Province, and related city and county agencies due to the ongoing spread of the 4th wave of COVID-19 and the extension of social distancing level 3 in non-metropolitan areas.

Since the confirmation of hosting the event in February 2018, the county has made every effort to successfully hold the Jeonnam Sports Festival by forming a TF team, maintaining the Sportium and stadium facilities, despite the spread of the COVID-19 infectious disease.

Due to the extension of social distancing level 3 caused by the recent increase in the proportion of COVID-19 confirmed cases in non-metropolitan areas during the vacation season, the Jeonnam Sports Council, after consultations with related agencies, made the final decision to cancel the festival through a board resolution on the 13th.

Governor Kim Junsung said, “Although it is regrettable and disappointing considering the efforts of athletes and small business owners such as those in the food service industry who prepared for the event and welcomed guests from cities and counties, it was an unavoidable choice for the safety of the residents during a time when quarantine and safety are paramount. We ask all residents to actively participate in COVID-19 vaccination and personal quarantine management to block the spread of COVID-19.”
