Gyeonggi-do to Hold 'Comfort Women Memorial Day' Event Online on the 14th
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province will hold the '30th Anniversary Event of the Japanese Military Comfort Women Victims Memorial Day' online on the 14th.
Earlier, the 11th Asia Solidarity Conference held a meeting in 2012 and declared August 14th of every year as the World Japanese Military 'Comfort Women' Memorial Day. This day marks the date when the late Kim Hak-soon held a press conference on August 14, 1991, and first publicly revealed the facts of the Japanese military 'comfort women' victimization.
Since then, Gyeonggi Province has held the 'Memorial Day' event annually since 2016 to comfort the pain of the Japanese military 'comfort women' victims and contribute to the proper establishment of historical awareness among its residents.
This year's Memorial Day event will be held online considering the difficulty of on-site memorials or guest visits for the elderly 'comfort women' victims due to the spread of COVID-19.
The event will be divided into ▲ 'Testimony of the Past,' featuring the late Kim Hak-soon's first victim testimony 30 years ago ▲ 'Response of the Present Generation,' including the current status and interviews of surviving Japanese military 'comfort women' victims and the exhibition status of the Girl Statue ▲ 'Pledge of the Future Generation,' conveying hopeful messages from youth.
Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung promised in a video commemorative speech, "Gyeonggi Province will work in step with the government so that more citizens and people around the world can share the horrific historical truth and justice," and "We will ensure sufficient consolation and support for the unjust victims."
