[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Eun-mo] In the second quarter of this year, one out of every four Android 5G smartphones sold worldwide was a product of China's Xiaomi. Samsung Electronics ranked fourth with a market share of 17%.
According to market research firm Strategy Analytics (SA) on the 9th (local time), Xiaomi's 5G smartphone shipments in the second quarter reached 24.3 million units, marking a 452% increase compared to the same period last year. This accounts for 25.7% of the total Android 5G smartphone shipments (94.6 million units) during this period.
Samsung Electronics shipped 15.6 million units in the second quarter, showing a 126% growth compared to the same period last year. Its market share was 16.5%, ranking fourth behind Xiaomi, Vivo (18.5%), and Oppo (17.9%). Samsung, which launched the world's first 5G smartphone in the first quarter of 2019, has sold over 92 million 5G smartphones cumulatively over 10 quarters up to the second quarter.
