Labor Groups Strongly Oppose Lee Jae-yong's Parole... "Proof of Samsung Republic"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] The labor community strongly opposed the parole decision for Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong on the 9th, saying it "proves that the Republic of Korea is a Samsung Republic."
The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) criticized in a statement that day, "It is a refusal to punish the criminal who was the mastermind and main culprit of the national corruption scandal, and it proves that this country is a conglomerate republic, a Samsung republic."
The KCTU pointed out, "At a time when there was discussion about issuing an arrest warrant for KCTU Chairman Yang Kyung-soo, who tried to represent the voices of workers falling due to COVID-19, who would agree or sympathize with this absurd situation where the mastermind of the national corruption scandal is being released from prison?" It added, "There is no way but a great transformation of our society," and warned, "The KCTU will actively engage in the struggle to dismantle the conglomerate republic and to eliminate the system of inequality and polarization."
The Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU) also mentioned 'justice for the rich, injustice for the poor,' saying, "Anyone can see this as favoritism toward conglomerates and it confirms that Samsung is still above the law in this country."
