Yeosu-si, Continued Spread of COVID-19 Variant Virus in August
33 Additional Infections in August Alone... Urgent Call for Strict Compliance with Enhanced Quarantine Rules
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Sim Kyung-taek] The spread of COVID-19 in the Yeosu area of Jeollanam-do continues, with 33 confirmed cases as of August 9 alone.
According to the city on the 9th, as of midnight on August 8, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in Yeosu, including 32 overseas entrants, reached 412, with 191 cases confirmed in July and August.
In particular, infections triggered by visits from confirmed cases from Hwaseong and Gimhae last month have spread to workplaces, restaurants, pubs, yoga centers, and educational facilities, resulting in 86 confirmed cases, all of which have been identified as the Delta variant.
Recently, infections have spread through joint gatherings such as dining together after golf meetings in other regions, leading to 7 additional confirmed cases among family and acquaintances. Notably, on the same day, another gathering was held at a screen golf course, where one employee was confirmed positive, raising concerns about local transmission mediated by the screen golf course.
The Delta variant spreads faster than the COVID-19 virus, and before contact tracing can identify contacts through epidemiological investigations, many cases spread through family and acquaintances, requiring citizens to exercise caution.
Also, as confirmed in cases from other regions, infection can occur simply by sitting in the same place without direct contact with a confirmed case, so extra caution is necessary.
A city official stated, “In businesses frequented by many people in tourist areas, infection can occur during card payment processes, so please strictly adhere to personal quarantine rules such as hand washing and wearing masks.”
In particular, they urged, “With the vacation season, young people such as university students returning to their hometowns are very active, and if confirmed positive, there is a high possibility of regional spread, so please refrain from private gatherings such as meeting friends.”
