Muju-gun, Late Firefly Appearance Survey Conducted
[Muju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Muju County announced on the 9th that it will conduct a survey on the occurrence status of late fireflies in 2021.
This survey aims to use the firefly, an environmental indicator insect, for protection, cultivation, and research data.
Muju County will conduct the occurrence status survey until October 1st and plans to visit during the occurrence time (about one hour before and after sunset) to visually inspect the surrounding environment and the number of fireflies.
After investigating the presence and number of late fireflies, the county plans to discover large habitats, protect them, and create a database to use as research material.
Previously, Muju County's survey of late firefly occurrence sites last year found fireflies in a total of 102 locations: 26 in Muju, 11 in Mupung, 20 in Seolcheon, and 18 in Anseong.
Late fireflies, which are mainly active in August and September, have larger body sizes and stronger luminescence compared to Unmunsan fireflies and Ae fireflies active in May and June, making them highly effective for mysterious exploration.
Meanwhile, Muju County will hold the 25th Muju Firefly Festival for nine days starting from the 28th. The festival will feature mysterious firefly explorations, and participation applications will be accepted only online through the Firefly Festival website.
