Yeongam-gun Accelerates Efforts to Improve Workers' Labor and Residential Environment
Expecting Welfare Improvement through Securing National and Provincial Funds via Selection in Various Public Contest Projects
[Yeongam=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Jeollanam-do Yeongam-gun announced on the 9th that it is making every effort to expand welfare facilities for workers and improve residential environments to revitalize employment and industry.
First, Yeongam-gun was finally selected for the ‘2021 Vibrant and Beautiful Street Creation Project’ contest, securing 1 billion KRW in national funds, and plans to invest a total project cost of 2.4 billion KRW including 300 million KRW from provincial funds and 1.1 billion KRW from county funds to create beautiful streets by 2023.
The development sections will be divided into three areas: Section 1, the street of Wangin Park, a symbol of communication and coexistence near the boundary area adjacent to Daebul Industrial Complex and Daebul residential complex and its access roads; Section 2, Solaside Street, a stronghold of tourism and leisure in the southwestern coast; and Section 3, themed streets of Sea Road, World Road, and Future Road, with projects proceeding accordingly.
Additionally, the complex cultural center selected last year is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2022, featuring facilities such as a worker capacity-building room, a small cinema, a communal laundry for workers, and a worker safety experience education center, expected to create synergy effects with the beautiful street creation project in terms of utilization.
The communal laundry for workers will contribute to improving the work environment and boosting workers’ motivation by providing clean work clothes to laborers working at small and medium-sized enterprises.
Yeongam-gun operates the Daebul Industrial Complex Domestic and Foreign Workers Welfare Center (Huestay) to improve the residential and working environments of workers within the industrial complex.
The worker welfare center is a dormitory operated by the county, with 66 rooms for domestic workers and 72 rooms for foreign workers, with a monthly rent of 200,000 KRW. In addition, through the industrial complex dormitory rental support project, it supports rental fees (300,000 KRW per month) for worker accommodations at partner companies within the industrial complex.
The industrial complex dormitory rental support project, selected through the Ministry of Employment and Labor’s contest (213 million KRW), currently benefits 53 people from 30 companies, and other services such as operating a happiness bus continue to provide commuting convenience for workers.
Through support for the operation of the Jeonnam Western Workers’ Health Center, which opened in July last year, efforts are being made to prevent occupational diseases among local workers and manage the health of workers in small-scale workplaces that are blind spots in health management. This year, health management for foreign workers and a noise-induced hearing loss prevention project for shipbuilding workers will be operated and supported as regionally specialized projects.
