Typhoon Lupit No. 9 Impact... Heavy Rain in Gyeongsang Region on 8th-9th
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyeon-jin] Typhoon No. 9 'Lupit' is rapidly moving northeast, and very heavy rain is expected in the Gyeongsang region on the 8th and 9th.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) announced on the 7th that Lupit is expected to move northward past the outer seas south of Jeju and the outer seas east of the South Sea on the afternoon of the 8th, heading toward the vicinity of Kyushu, Japan. As of 3 p.m. on the same day, Lupit was moving northeast at a speed of 66 km/h in the sea about 140 km northeast of Taipei, Taiwan.
The typhoon is expected to pass through the sea northwest of Okinawa, Japan, and the sea from southwest-southwest to north of Kagoshima on the 8th, then pass through the sea north-northwest of Osaka on the 9th.
The KMA forecasted that due to Lupit, strong easterly winds will bring more than 150 mm of very heavy rain to the coastal areas of the Gyeongsang region and the Yeongdong area of Gangwon Province between the 8th and 9th. In particular, heavy rain is expected to start from the afternoon of the 8th along the Gyeongsang coastal area, and from the early morning of the 9th in Gangwon Yeongdong and Ulleungdo, with a high possibility of heavy rain warnings being issued.
Since the winds along the East and South coasts are expected to be very strong, blowing at 30 to 50 km/h with instantaneous maximum wind speeds exceeding 70 km/h, the KMA urged thorough precautions to prevent secondary damage caused by falling objects such as signs, and damage to facilities like outdoor screening clinics, construction sites, and vinyl greenhouses.

The KMA also added that for the time being, very high waves caused by swells will strongly hit the sandy beaches along Jeju Island, the West Coast, the South Coast, and the East Coast, with some waves overtopping coastal roads, rocky shores, and breakwaters. Low-lying areas may be flooded, so special attention to safety accidents along the coast is requested.
