Gokseong-gun, Good Morning Walking Now Manages Health via Mobile App
Operation of Non-face-to-face Walking Program Using Mobile App WalkOn
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Yoo Geun-gi) announced on the 5th that it will operate the 2021 second half physical activity program, Mobile Good Morning Walking, from September to December this year.
Gokseong-gun has been operating Good Morning Walking since 2016. It was part of a weight control program through residents' regular walking habits. With positive responses from residents, Gokseong-gun's walking practice rate has maintained a higher level than other cities and counties in Jeollanam-do every year. However, due to COVID-19 last year, Gokseong-gun reduced the operation period of the Good Morning Walking program. As a result, the walking practice rate of local residents recorded 36.2%, lower than Jeollanam-do's 38.1%.
Accordingly, from this year, Gokseong-gun is operating the walking program in a non-face-to-face manner using the mobile app WalkOn. After installing the mobile app on a phone, residents participate in walking on their own when they have time while carrying their phone, and the results are recorded. Unlike the past group walking programs, this method allows participation alone at a convenient time.
To participate, residents must make a visit reservation by phone, then on the reserved day visit the responsible department (Health Promotion Division) to submit an application form and install the mobile app. Anyone, regardless of age or gender, who has a phone capable of installing the mobile app can participate.
To increase residents' participation, Gokseong-gun has encouraged involvement by awarding local gift certificates (Gokseong Simcheong Gift Certificates) to the top three walkers each month. Thanks to this, the number of WalkOn participants has increased to about 140 members and continues to grow.
Gokseong-gun plans to encourage even more residents to participate in mobile walking in the second half of the year. It is especially important to help residents maintain their health habits on their own despite the COVID-19 situation. To this end, the method of awarding local gift certificates has been changed for the second half of the year. Anyone who walks more than 400,000 steps cumulatively each month can receive a Simcheong Gift Certificate regardless of ranking.
