[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized that measures allowing only COVID-19 vaccinated individuals to enter restaurants, theaters, and gyms should be expanded nationwide.
On the 3rd (local time), President Biden stated, "Other cities should follow New York City's example. You must present proof of vaccination to gain entry."
Biden's remarks came after New York City announced its 'vaccine pass' system. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that starting from the 16th, proof of at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose will be required to use indoor facilities such as restaurants, gyms, and theaters in New York City. Employees at these facilities will also be required to be vaccinated.
While President Biden emphasized the necessity of verifying vaccination status, he said there is no need to officially introduce a 'vaccine pass.'
The New York Times (NYT) reported, citing sources, that the final list of businesses subject to this measure has not been decided yet, but museums are likely to be included.
Vaccination status will be verified by presenting the CDC vaccination certificate or using New York State's app, 'Excelsior Pass,' which confirms vaccination status.
NYT explained that New York City's measure is similar to the 'vaccine pass' systems introduced in France and Italy and is the first case in the United States.
