Human Rights Departments Established in Police Stations Nationwide... "Strengthening Protection of Citizens' Human Rights"
Implementation of Police Organization Restructuring
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The police are establishing human rights dedicated departments at police stations nationwide to promote the early establishment of a human rights protection system.
The National Police Agency announced on the 3rd that, following the organizational reform implemented on the 30th of last month, the current city and provincial police agency's Inspection and Audit Officer has been renamed to Inspection, Audit, and Human Rights Officer, and the police station's Inspection and Audit Officer has been renamed to Inspection, Audit, and Human Rights Officer, taking full charge of human rights protection-related duties.
The police plan to explicitly reflect "human rights" in the organizational titles and expand the scope of duties and roles, which were previously focused on inspection, corruption, and civil complaint tasks, to cover overall police activities including ▲ matters related to human rights protection and improvement ▲ investigation and handling of human rights violations.
Accordingly, Inspection, Audit, and Human Rights Officers will oversee human rights-related policies at the security field, establish and operate "On-site Human Rights Counseling Centers" to listen to the public's human rights-related demands, and operate "Dedicated Human Rights Violation Investigation Teams" to lead investigations into human rights violations throughout police activities.
Additionally, through the "Detainee Interview System," they will monitor for human rights violations during investigation procedures such as arrest, interrogation, and detention of suspects held at police stations, resolving grievances and serving as an internal control mechanism.
