30th Anniversary of Victim Testimony... Online Memorial Ceremony Due to COVID-19

Events Include Virtual March and Sending Support Messages
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family will hold a video memorial ceremony and an online march on the 14th to commemorate the Japanese Military Comfort Women Victims Memorial Day.
This year marks the fourth Memorial Day and the 30th anniversary of the first testimony by a Japanese military comfort woman victim. In 1991, the late Kim Hak-soon was the first to publicly testify about her experience as a comfort woman, and the government designated the Memorial Day as a national holiday in December 2017 and has held commemorative ceremonies since then.
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Ministry will hold the memorial ceremony via video. Applications to participate in the video memorial ceremony are accepted on the Memorial Day website until the 10th. Applicants will receive a participation link via text message or email at 10 a.m. on the day of the ceremony.
On the Memorial Day website, public participation events such as an online march and sending support messages are being held so that citizens can collectively remember the significance of the Japanese military comfort women issue.
The online march allows participants to create their own characters on the website, and these characters walk together through historical sites related to restoring the honor of the victims. Anyone who applies by the 9th can participate.
On the Memorial Day website’s ‘Girim-i Chagokchagok’ menu, visitors can send messages of support expressing solidarity with the Japanese military comfort women victims.
The website also provides a timeline related to the Japanese military comfort women issue, offering over 80 entries in chronological order detailing efforts to resolve the issue since the first testimony of Kim Hak-soon.
