Jeju Fire Department Rescues Two Elementary School Students Drowning in Woldaecheon River
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Fire Station (Chief Ko Jae-woo) announced on the 2nd that volunteer firefighter and waterfront safety officer Kim Min-sook rescued two drowning victims at Woldaecheon.
On the 27th of last month, at around 11:10 a.m., Kim Min-sook, who was assigned as a waterfront safety officer patrolling Woldaecheon, noticed two elementary school students (4th grade) struggling in the water downstream of the river. She entered the water herself and pushed them toward the stone bridge, rescuing them.
They returned home safely without any health issues.
After the rescue operation, to prevent similar accidents from recurring, a request was made to the Oedo Residents' Autonomous Center to install safety facilities, and safety buoys have been installed at the accident site.
The Jeju Fire Station volunteer firefighters' waterfront safety officers consist of 178 members across six volunteer fire squads and have been operating since last month at four beaches and one river in Jeju City.
The waterfront safety officers assist the 119 Citizen Water Rescue Team and conduct patrol activities, serving as safety guardians for water play during the summer season.
Chief Ko Jae-woo said, “Thanks to the responsible response of volunteer firefighter and waterfront safety officer Kim Min-sook, two precious lives were saved. Firefighters and volunteer firefighters will do their best to minimize water play safety accidents among residents during the summer.”
