Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority, First Port Worldwide to Obtain OBP Certification
International Eco-Certification Body Control Union Holds Certification Award Ceremony
Promoting Continuous Sharing and Expansion of Eco-Friendly Resource Circulation Activities Aligned with ESG
[Gwangyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (President Cha Minsik) announced on the 28th that it has obtained OBP (Ocean Bound Plastic) certification from Control Union Korea (CEO Lee Suyong, CU), an international eco-friendly certification audit organization.
In particular, the authority's acquisition of the OBP Collection certification this time is the first case both globally among ports and domestically in Korea.
OBP is a certification created with the purpose of preventing marine pollution by collecting plastics flowing into the ocean. Control Union (CU), an international eco-friendly certification audit organization with over 100 years of history, systematically audits and awards the certification.
The OBP certification awarding ceremony was held online in a non-face-to-face manner considering the rapid spread of COVID-19.
Since last year, the authority has been promoting a resource circulation project that collects marine plastic waste discharged from vessels entering Gwangyang Port and upcycles it.
Additionally, this year, through cooperation with various related organizations, a network was established to track the entire upcycling process.
President Cha Minsik said, “It is a great honor that the authority has become the first in Korea and the first port in the world to obtain OBP certification,” and evaluated, “Obtaining the OBP certification is a valuable result recognizing the authority’s efforts to protect the marine environment from plastic waste and to achieve sustainable resource circulation.”
He added, “Taking this OBP certification as an opportunity, we will further share and expand the authority’s eco-friendly resource circulation projects to realize ESG.”
