Lee Jae-myung Orders "Strong Action Against Illegal Activities in Rivers and Valleys"
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, has ordered a strong response to illegal activities occurring at some restaurants and lodging facilities near rivers and valleys during the vacation season. The river and valley illegal activity cleanup project is one of Governor Lee Jae-myung's greatest achievements.
At the expanded Gyeonggi Province executive meeting held on the afternoon of the 27th, Governor Lee said, "Many people praise the results of the valley maintenance in Gyeonggi Province and have a great interest in how it is managed, so please pay special attention," urging accordingly.
He continued, "Since it is a seasonal summer business, there seems to be a tendency to think that minor violations are acceptable," adding, "If you violate a little at first, step by step, you may end up back where you started. Please take immediate strong action against violations so that such thoughts do not arise at all."
This measure follows recent reports of illegal activities occurring at some restaurants and lodging facilities near rivers and valleys coinciding with the peak vacation season.
Accordingly, the province plans to conduct an emergency survey of illegal activities across the entire province’s rivers and valleys, immediately dismantle illegal facilities found in violation according to relevant laws, and pursue legal action through judicial authorities.
Furthermore, if illegal activities recur or are left unattended for a long time, all responsible officials, including deputy heads of the relevant city or county, will be audited and held accountable through disciplinary actions depending on the case.
Additionally, strong measures such as dismissal will be taken against river watchers, including valley keepers responsible for on-site management, if necessary.
Since June 2019, the province has been working to restore clean valleys to residents by removing indiscriminately proliferated illegal facilities across 234 rivers and valleys in 25 cities and counties within the province and improving convenience facilities.
With the interest of residents and the voluntary participation and cooperation of nearby residents and merchants, 99.7% of illegal businesses around rivers and valleys voluntarily dismantled within about a year of project implementation. To maintain clean valleys, the province currently employs about 230 river watchers, including valley keepers, who conduct crackdowns and monitoring activities to prevent recurrence of illegal activities.
