Comprehensive Survey on Violence Victimization for 60,000 Student Athletes to Be Conducted
Online Survey on Violence Victimization from Last Summer Vacation to Present
Joint Special Investigation Conducted if Continuous Violence or Concealment Suspected
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Ministry of Education will conduct a comprehensive survey on violence victimization targeting approximately 60,000 student athletes enrolled in elementary, middle, and high schools.
On the 25th, the Ministry of Education announced that, together with 17 metropolitan and provincial offices of education, it will carry out a five-week comprehensive survey on violence victimization among student athletes starting from the 26th. The survey will include not only student athletes belonging to school sports clubs but also those who are individually registered and active as athletes.
This comprehensive survey on violence victimization will be conducted online to respond to COVID-19 prevention measures and to allow students to answer freely and comfortably. It will cover cases of violence victimization from last summer vacation until the current survey period, spanning one year.
To minimize external influence, school sports club officials will be excluded from the survey process. To encourage active participation and responses, student athletes and their parents will be informed in advance about the background and necessity of the survey.
In cases where continuous and repetitive violence has occurred or where organized concealment or minimization is suspected, a joint special investigation by the Ministry of Education and metropolitan and provincial offices of education will also be conducted. After assessing the survey results, strict follow-up measures will be taken against perpetrators according to relevant procedures.
If the perpetrator is a player, the case will be handled according to school violence procedures, including resolution by the school principal and review and decision by the education office support committee. If the perpetrator is a coach, police investigations following child abuse reports, disciplinary actions regarding their status, and sanctions on their qualifications as sports instructors will be enforced.
Following the occurrence of violence incidents in the sports community last year, the "Measures to Strengthen the Protection of Student Athletes' Human Rights" were established at the end of last year, and the comprehensive survey on violence victimization will be regularized. Student athletes and parents can report violence victimization related to school sports clubs at any time through the Ministry of Education's Violence Victimization Reporting Center.
