Hyundai Heavy Labor and Management "United for the Rebound of the Shipbuilding Industry"... Signing Ceremony for Two Years' Wage and Collective Agreement Held
Labor Union Agrees to Cooperate for Company Normalization, Company Commits to Employment Stability
Signing Ceremony for '2019 Wage Negotiations' and '2020 Wage and Collective Bargaining' Held
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Hyundai Heavy Industries' labor and management, having recently concluded two years' worth of collective bargaining, pledged a fresh start.
On the 22nd, Hyundai Heavy Industries and the Metal Workers' Union Hyundai Heavy Industries Branch held a 'Labor-Management Declaration for the Development of the Shipbuilding Industry' ceremony at the Ulsan headquarters main building, declaring their joint commitment to the development of the shipbuilding industry and the company's resurgence.
The declaration ceremony was attended by Hyundai Heavy Industries President Han Young-seok, National Metal Workers' Union Chairman Kim Ho-gyu, and Metal Workers' Union Hyundai Heavy Industries Branch Chief Cho Kyung-geun, among others.
This labor-management declaration came as the shipbuilding industry, which had been in a prolonged slump, recently showed signs of recovery in orders, and both sides recognized that to seize this rare opportunity, they must unite through trust and cooperation rather than conflict.
Hyundai Heavy Industries pledged to do its best to ensure employment stability and maintain and improve working conditions, while the union agreed to cooperate for the company's management normalization and to foster a positive working atmosphere on the production floor. Additionally, labor and management committed to actively forming industrial and sectoral consultative bodies to secure employment stability and quality jobs. They also plan to actively cooperate in creating a safe workplace to prevent serious accidents, a critical issue in recent industrial sites.
Furthermore, they agreed to strive for the growth of partner companies, improve safety and working conditions, and develop a sound and fair labor-management relationship to fulfill their responsibilities as corporate citizens growing together. This declaration is expected to mark a major turning point in Hyundai Heavy Industries' labor-management relations.
Hyundai Heavy Industries' labor-management relations had faced difficulties, especially in 2019, when conflicts intensified over the physical division for the acquisition of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, causing the 2019 collective bargaining to extend beyond the year twice.
However, after resolving conflicts by concluding two years' worth of collective bargaining for 2019 and 2020 on the 16th, and uniting their intentions through this labor-management declaration, they are expected to actively build a culture of trust and cooperation going forward.
