Seoul City Conducts Surprise Inspection on Hazardous Material Storage and Handling at Auto Repair Shops... 139 Companies Caught
In the Past 5 Years, 21 Out of 77 Car Repair Shop Fires Involved Hazardous Materials
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Fire and Disaster Headquarters announced on the 21st that it conducted surprise inspections on the storage and handling of hazardous materials within automobile repair shops and detected 147 violations at 139 locations.
According to the Fire and Disaster Headquarters, there were 77 fires in automobile repair shops in Seoul over the past five years. Among them, 9 fires were directly caused by hazardous materials such as painting work, and 12 fires were expanded due to hazardous materials, accounting for 27.3% of all fires occurring in automobile repair shops related to hazardous materials.
In fact, in October 2019, a fire broke out at an automobile repair shop in Songpa-gu due to vapor from paint spreading during car painting work. Despite the full mobilization of firefighting forces from the local fire station, it took over an hour to extinguish the fire.
Considering these risks, the Fire and Disaster Headquarters conducted surprise inspections on the storage and handling of hazardous materials at 358 automobile repair shops registered in Seoul from May 17 to June 25.
As a result of inspecting these businesses, 147 violations were detected at 139 locations. The most common violations were related to facility standards for small quantities of hazardous materials storage and handling places under the Seoul Hazardous Materials Safety Management Ordinance. Other violations included improper labeling of hazardous material transport containers, accumulation of combustible materials nearby, poor signage, and malfunctioning fire extinguisher pressure.
