'Benz Manchwi Driver' Who Hit Early Morning Worker Admits Charges in First Trial
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] Kwon Mo (30), who drove a Mercedes-Benz vehicle while intoxicated late at night and fatally struck a worker at a construction site, admitted to the charges in his first trial.
On the 20th, at the first trial held under the jurisdiction of Judge Park So-yeon of the Seoul Eastern District Court Criminal Division 7, the defense attorney stated, "We admit all the charges" in the case where Kwon was indicted for violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (dangerous driving causing death) and other charges.
Kwon was prosecuted for hitting and killing A (60), who was dismantling the subway soundproof wall near Ttukseom Station in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, with his Mercedes-Benz passenger car around 2 a.m. on May 24.
At the time of the accident, Kwon was driving at 148 km/h, and his blood alcohol concentration was 0.188%, which is at the level of license cancellation. It was also reported that Kwon had previously received a summary order with a fine of 4 million won for drunk driving in August last year.
The prosecution indicted Kwon on the 3rd of last month for violating the so-called "Yoon Chang-ho Act," the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (dangerous driving causing death), considering that his blood alcohol concentration was above the license cancellation level (0.08% or higher).
Kwon submitted six letters of apology acknowledging all charges before the first trial.
