'Investment in Brothels and Sexual Harassment' Crossed the Line by Gwangju Police, Now Assaulting Fellow Officers
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] A police officer in Gwangju has been booked for assaulting a fellow police officer.
Concerns have been raised about declining discipline as inappropriate conduct by police continues, including a police officer who was sent to the prosecution for investing in a so-called brothel operator who arranged female hostesses for entertainment establishments in the Gwangju area to gain illicit profits, and another police officer who was severely disciplined for sexually harassing a woman while intoxicated.
According to the police on the 20th, Sergeant A of the Gwangju Seobu Police Station was arrested on the spot on charges of assaulting a police officer (obstruction of official duties, etc.).
Sergeant A is accused of pushing the face of a responding police officer around 10:30 p.m. the previous day on a road in Chipyeong-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, and committing other acts of violence.
At the time, a citizen who saw Sergeant A staggering and stepping onto the road reported it, and when the responding police officers urged Sergeant A to go home, he reportedly started an altercation.
Sergeant A reportedly stated during the police investigation that "he does not remember."
Earlier the previous day, the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit of the Gwangju Police Agency sent Sergeant B to the prosecution with a recommendation for indictment without detention on charges of aiding and abetting under the Act on the Prevention of Prostitution and Protection of Victims.
Sergeant B is suspected of handing over tens of millions of won in investment funds to a former gangster brothel operator, knowing that the money would be used for expenses related to prostitution establishments.
Additionally, the Gwangju Bukbu Police Station imposed a severe disciplinary action of a three-month suspension on Sergeant C for sexually harassing a woman on the street while intoxicated.
