George Soros and Bill Gates Acquire UK Healthcare Company to Support Medical Aid in Low-Income Countries
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] George Soros and Bill Gates are acquiring the UK medical device company Molocic to prevent tropical diseases in low-income countries. Gates and Soros plan to transform Molocic into a social enterprise supporting healthcare projects in low-income countries through this acquisition.
According to major foreign media on the 18th (local time), the Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF) plans to invest at least ?30 million in Molocic. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is also investing in Molocic. SEDF and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, together with Molocic’s current shareholders Foresight Group and Calcurus Capital, plan to acquire Molocic and transform it into a social enterprise. SEDF is leading the consortium.
Molocic produces diagnostic reagents for tropical diseases such as dengue fever and tropical skin disease onchocerciasis. Soros and Gates intend to help low-income countries quickly and affordably analyze tropical diseases by acquiring Molocic. Molocic is also researching reagents that can detect COVID-19 infection in just 10 minutes for only $1 in collaboration with a research institute in Senegal. Molocic’s name is expected to change to 'Global Access Health' in the future.
Molocic is a for-profit company headquartered in Bedford, southeastern UK. After being acquired by the consortium led by SEDF, Molocic announced it will focus on research to assist low-income countries.
Mark Davis, CEO of Molocic, said they will prioritize supporting Africa and will no longer leave Africa as a neglected entity. He stated, "The only way to do more is to free ourselves from the cycle of seeking unfair profits." CEO Davis founded Molocic together with his father, Paul Davis.
Sean Hinton, CEO of SEDF, emphasized that the advanced country model of developing expensive drugs at high costs does not work globally and that they aim to solve problems where existing markets have failed in low-income countries. He explained that this plan is about acquiring a company for good and added that they will continue to operate it as a single business without considering profits.
