[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] The Tokyo metropolitan area, the host city of the Tokyo Olympics, has recorded daily COVID-19 cases in the 1,000s for five consecutive days.
On the 18th, Tokyo reported 1,008 new COVID-19 cases, five days before the opening of the Olympics. The number of new cases decreased by 402 compared to the previous day but increased by 394 compared to a week ago on the 11th.
The Japanese government declared a "state of emergency" in response to the spread of COVID-19 in Tokyo starting from the 12th. The declaration is set to last until the 22nd of next month. This period includes the entire Tokyo Olympics, which will be held from the 23rd of this month to the 8th of next month.
According to NHK's tally, as of 6:30 PM on the same day, 3,103 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed nationwide in Japan. This marks five consecutive days with cases in the 3,000s. This is an increase of over 1,000 cases compared to the 2,031 cases recorded a week ago on the 11th.
