Councilor Lee Young-ran of Suncheon City Council: "The Jangdae Park Area Should Be Developed into a Yeosun Incident Historical Park"
Request for Reconsideration of Planned LH Happy Housing Site in Jangdae Park Area
[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Lee Young-ran, a member of the Suncheon City Council (Wangjo 2-dong, Democratic Party), proposed on the 16th during the 2nd plenary session of the 253rd extraordinary meeting that the Jangdae Park area be developed into a Yeosun Incident Historical Park through a 5-minute free speech.
Lee said, "On June 29, the Yeosun Incident Special Act finally passed the National Assembly," and added, "Now is the time to calm down from the atmosphere of celebration and welcome, and to calmly take care of what we need to do."
According to Lee, "The top priority for the local community after the passage of the Yeosun Special Act is to assist in the truth-finding work and to lead the memorial projects to be carried out at the national or Jeonnam Province level," and stated, "The first task we must prioritize in Suncheon is to build a memorial tower and park in the proper location."
She continued, "When erecting a monument, it should be placed at a site related to the incident, but the Palma Gymnasium, where the current memorial tower is located, has no relation at all," and argued, "The optimal location to erect the October 19 Yeosun Incident memorial tower and related monuments is the Jangdae Park area."
After explaining the events that took place in the Jangdae Park area during the Yeosun Incident and its historical significance, Lee criticized, "Suncheon City has selected the Jangdae Park area, which bears traces of this painful history, as the site for LH Happy Housing and is pushing forward with apartment construction."

She added, "There has been controversy over the suitability of the currently promoted Happy Housing site in terms of residential conditions during the site selection process," and concluded her remarks by proposing, "To realize the purpose of the Yeosun Incident Special Act, I suggest developing the Jangdae Park area, the optimal location, into the October 19 Yeosun Incident Historical Park."
